Satellite 1

Last news from Satellite 1...

Quite unexpectedly, Satellite 1 made a (small) profit. We were therefore very pleased to be able to donate £50 to the RNLI in memory of Marion van der Voort. Many of us are shortly heading off to Orbital, the 2008 Eastercon, and it is going to be very odd to walk into the Dealers' Room and not see her there.

The remainder of the money which we made from S1, once expenses have been dealt with, is going to be put towards Satellite 2, a two-day con in July 2009 commemorating the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon forty years ago. The Satellite 2 team is being led by Michael and Christine, who did such brilliant work with Satellite 1; it promises to be an excellent weekend. The Guest of Honour is Iain M. Banks, whose new Culture novel, Matter, has just been published. Join!

We're not going to take this web site down any time soon, but this is going to be the last news update. I would like to thank once again the team who made Satellite 1 such a success, not just Michael and Christine for their sterling work with the hotel and the programme, but Jamie who somehow let us persuade him to be Treasurer, and Mad Elf who ran the web site and quietly provided many of the little touches which made the difference between a good con and a very good con; he was invaluable in making sure it all ran smoothly. Also we do need to thank Carolyn for her work before the con in helping us find the hotel, and Paul, Dalg and Danae for their help on the day. Final thanks, too, to all our speakers and panellists, and especially to Ken MacLeod for being the sort of guest of honour a concom dreams of.

Satellite 1 is a one day convention being held in Glasgow to commemorate 50 years since the Space Age dawned with the launching of Sputnik 1. Starting at 10:00, there will be panels on science (what has been achieved and where do we go from here?) and on science fiction (how did man actually making steps into space affect SF, and what does the future hold?), fun panels and serious panels. The day will be rounded off with a Dead Laika Party and quiz, from 20:45 til late.
